In 2002, six friends from Afghanistan — brought together by shared hope, resilience, and a determination to support those starting anew — persuaded a local school in Edgware to let them use a few classrooms on Saturdays. Among them was Farid Mall, whose vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment played a defining role in turning a small idea into a powerful community movement.
From the very beginning, Farid was more than a co-founder; he was a driving force. His belief that every refugee deserved dignity, safety, and a chance to thrive shaped Paiwand’s early values and continues to guide its mission today. Farid spent countless hours welcoming families, listening to their struggles, and ensuring that everyone who walked through Paiwand’s doors felt seen, supported, and valued. His dedication built the foundation of trust and compassion that still anchors the organisation.

As the community grew, so did Paiwand’s mission. Over the years, the organisation expanded its services to include immigration advice, housing advocacy, mental health counselling, youth activities, and supported accommodation. Each new project emerged from the same principle that guided Farid and the founding team from the beginning: listen first, then act with compassion, integrity, and purpose.
Today, Paiwand stands as a lifeline for thousands — a place built on the courage of its founders, the strength of its community, and the enduring belief that every person deserves the chance to rebuild their life with dignity and hope.

Since 2018, Paiwand has been guided by the dedicated leadership of Fahima Zaheen, taking over during a period of significant challenge, Fahima not only stabilised Paiwand but strengthened it, placing the charity on firmer footing than ever before.
In 2019, her commitment to building strong financial reserves, combined with her IT skills, enabled Paiwand to modernise rapidly. During the Covid pandemic, her decisive action and technical expertise saved the organisation over £25,000 by digitising devices and systems—an achievement that helped keep Paiwand’s doors open when the community needed support the most.
In 2021, following the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, Fahima played a pivotal role in responding to the urgent humanitarian crisis. She led the creation of an advocacy mechanism in partnership with the City Corporation, ensuring coordinated support for over 1,000 Afghans evacuated to the UK. Her leadership during this period provided stability, guidance, and a vital voice for newly arrived families navigating an uncertain future.
Fahima’s leadership goes far beyond crisis response. Her instinct to create a parent‑friendly workplace and her dedication to opening career pathways for refugee women, particularly those from the Afghan community, have reshaped Paiwand’s culture and impact. Under her direction, Paiwand continues to grow as a place of opportunity, dignity, and hope.
