About Us

Afghan Association Paiwand

Afghan Association Paiwand is a community-led charity based in London. Founded by Afghan refugees, we now work with people from all backgrounds who have been displaced or are rebuilding their lives in the UK.

Through advocacy, housing, education, and wellbeing support, we help individuals and families find safety, independence, and belonging.

Our Mission

Our Mission

Paiwand’s mission is to empower refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. We provide advice, education, housing, and wellbeing support that help people overcome challenges and move toward stability and independence.

Our Vision

Our Vision

Our vision is a society where everyone is treated equally and can live with security, opportunity, and respect. We believe in inclusion through compassion, where refugees and migrants are recognised and valued for their strength and contributions to the community.

Our Approach

Our approach is shaped by professional expertise and lived experience. Our team members have faced similar challenges to those we support, which helps us listen, understand, and respond with empathy. We work collaboratively to offer lasting support that helps people heal and thrive.

Our Values

Holistic and Integrated Support

We take a whole-person approach — addressing social, emotional, and practical needs together. By seeing every individual in full, we help create lasting, sustainable change in their lives.

Person-Centered Empowerment

People are at the heart of everything we do. We listen first, support informed choices, and give individuals the tools and confidence to shape their own futures.

Equal Rights for All

We believe in fairness, dignity, and justice for everyone. Our work challenges discrimination, breaks down barriers, and promotes equality across all communities.

Passion and Commitment to People

Our strength comes from compassion. We stand beside those we serve with empathy, respect, and unwavering dedication to helping them thrive.

Our History

Paiwand began in 2002, when six friends who had fled conflict in Afghanistan persuaded a local school in Edgware to let them use its classrooms on Saturdays. Together, they created a small space where refugee parents and children could learn, connect, and find a sense of belonging in their new community.

One of the founders, Farid Mall, remained devoted to the cause for sixteen years. Through his dedication, Paiwand grew from a single classroom into a trusted organisation supporting more than two thousand people from around the world across North-West London.

When Farid stepped down in 2017, our community celebrated his service and wished him every success in the future. His vision continues to guide us today as we work to help refugees and asylum seekers settle, rebuild, and thrive.
